Types of (NON)Rock Climbing Ropes

There are many things to consider when buying a rope.  The first question you want to consider is, what kind of ropes are there out there?  Simply put, there are two kinds, dynamic and static.

Static rope is designed NOT to stretch.  While Dynamic rope is.

The uses for these ropes include...

Static - Rappelling and ascending.  Can be/is used for rescue operations that entail just that, rappelling and ascending.  Static ropes are not certified to be climbed with as they are not tested to take the falling forces that dynamics can handle.  Static rope comes in one color throughout the rope.

Dynamic Rope

Dynamic - As a generality, these are used for climbing.  The stretch that comes with dynamic ropes allows the user to have a less aggressive fall lessening the forces on the rope.  This makes it possible to take big falls (whippers) and the rope will not snap.  Dynamic rope is either a dual colored rope or a dual patterned rope.  If it is dual color, there will be a middle marker.  On the flip side, if it is dual pattern there will be no middle marker because the middle will be where the pattern changes.

There are different types of dynamic ropes and they include with their uses...

Single - They have a ranging diameter from a 8.9 - 11mm.  A ranging weight from 52 - 77g/m.  A ranging length from 50-70m.  Can take a range of 5-17 falls (dependent on the diameter/length)
Ideal use: these ropes are ideal for any lead, ice, or top rope climber.  The sheer weight of single ropes limit its uses in mountaineering when a lighter rope will suffice.  The length/weight will depend on what you want do with the rope.

Half - They have a ranging diameter from a 8-8.5 mm.  A ranging weight from 41-53g/m.  A ranging length from 50-70m.  Can take a range of 6-8 falls (dependent on the diameter/length)
Ideal use: these ropes are ideal for any mountaineering, ice climbing, alpine routes that have you wandering around the rock.  It is a much lighter rope than a single but can not take as much punishment as the single.

Twin - They have a ranging diameter from a 7-8 mm.  A ranging weight from 35-40g/m.  A ranging length from 50-70m.  Can take a range of 10-17 falls (dependent on the diameter/length)
Ideal use: they are ideal for trad climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, and any long rock climbs.  Having a twin rope can assist in ease of rappelling and also take the force of falls on questionable gear.
