Chapel Pond

Location: Located in the Keene Valley, New York

Type of Climbing: Bouldering

Type of Rock: Granite

Camping: Free camping all around the area (just have to find it)

Guidebook: Adirondack Rock: A Rock Climber's Guide by Jim Lawyer and Jeremy Haas
Amenities...
There is not much around in this area.  There is a gas station and small local grocery shops but that is it.  I would recommend stocking up in Lake George, NY or Lake Placid, NY (depending on where you are coming from) before you get to the Keene Valley.

Climbing here...
The bouldering here is OK.  Not great, not bad, and not as good as McKenzie Pond.  It basically has less selection than McKenzie and less variety.  The bouldering here is still good, for a day, but do not look to make a trip out of it just for bouldering here.
UPDATE TO NOTE:  I did not trad climb here at Chapel.  I have heard that the trad climbing is absolutely amazing, which I believe to be true.  There are huge granite walls that cascade over these "ponds" of the ADK that are more like lakes.

The Guidebook...
The guidebook is a must-have for the area (the Adirondacks that is), but maybe not so much of a must-have for the Chapel Pond Boulders because they are so easy to find and make sense of what the ratings are.  If you are a boulderer you can meander your way around the area without the guidebook.

The Weather...

My opinion on general area...
Maybe one of my favorite places in the country?  Yeah, I am not exaggerating.  The area is spectacular with huge "ponds", lakes, rivers, and granite slabs jutting out from those said bodies of water.  The area is so green that you could actually get sick of the color. (somehow)

Camping...
Free camping is just around the corner of Chapel Pond.  It actually is a hidden, dirt road right off of 73.  To see the dirt access road use Google's Street View on the more northern point and look west of 73.

Recommendation...
You should go to the ADK even if you are not a climber.  That's how nice it is there.  If you ARE a climber, then you must go!  There are more trad opportunities in the area but for the boulderer McKenzie Pond Boulders will give you something to do for a good 3 days.  Chapel Pond on the other hand will give you something to do for at least one.  If you plan on staying in the area longer, maybe go hiking, or take a mountain bike out.

  1. Giving Chapel Pond a low rating based on taking a trip there only to boulder is completely misleading.

Chapel Pond is an AMAZING place for climbers. There are hundreds of great trad routes within walking distance from the pond and camping. Spiders Web, Beer Walls, Chapel Pond Slab... etc

  2. I agree with you Chris that Chapel Pond LOOKS good to me for trad. But, I reviewed the area on what I know from the experience there. I unfortunately did not trad climb at Chapel but only bouldered though I wish I did. I do hope to get back to Chapel Pond with trad gear one day, such great scenery above those high granite walls. Thanks for sharing!
