Traveling 1700 miles Without an iPod

Traveling across country has been something that I have done too many times.  Traveling to/from SLC has been done, I think, 4 times.  I don't care what any one says, the more you do it, the more you do not get accustomed to it, and in actuality the more you learn to hate it.

I love traveling but seriously, driving through this stellar line of states gets really freakin' old, real quick.

1700 miles from Cleveland to Salt Lake City

The worst part of this trip besides leaving family, friends, people who know who I am, packing my stuff into garbage bags, packing my car, is that I do not have an iPod to travel with. Do you have any idea how frustrating that is? Driving for 27 hours and having to switch out CDs every hour and a half sucks. I can't rely on radio either because, if you've ever traveled in these states, there are limited radio stations once you're outside of the major cities and most of them are country. I am not a huge fan nor a fan at all of country.  When I'm really desperate I listen to Delilah.  Nah, I'm kidding, sort of, not really.

The other not-so-fun part about driving all day is the chance of hallucinating.  I know I'm not the only one who this has happened to.  No, I am not talking about drugs being used.  I am talking about driving so long that you reach a point of sleep deprivation that you start to see some really freaky shit.

So here's my headlight setup and what I saw when I was sleep deprived.

I'm not exaggerating here.  Last time I hallucinated, I saw an upside down rubber duck that had a very angry look on it's face.  On top of the road markers, I saw bouncing orbs.  It was bizarre and scary when I passed a sign saying, "Next Rest Stop 35 Miles".  I remember thinking, "Wow, I really hope I make it!"

My only solution to these long drives: sunflower seeds.  Chewing sunflower seeds keeps me going and keeps me awake.  I've also heard smoking cigarettes helps, but if you're not a smoker then that option is out.

Friends and family have asked me if I am excited to get back to SLC.  When I answer I sound like it's the last place on earth I would rather be, when in it's really the only place I want to be.  I just dread this drive.

Not stopping until I see this...

  1. I feel your pain buddy - but I gotta say, nothing is worse than the haul across Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Those are the WORST states in the country to drive across, no question. I too am in the iPod-less realm, and it's definitely not fun. On my drive out to Flagstaff a few weeks ago, I totally started listening to country music, and shamefully found myself singing along to some of the songs by the end of the trip. Yikes.

But really, some of those songs are kinda catchy..

    Safe travels buddy!

  2. I've been fortunate and I haven't really needed to go through those states yet. I have a feeling the sing-a-long country ride might happen to me on this one!

  4. That drive sucks. I drive from UT to Northern WI (1600 miles) a few times a year usually and it is brutal. Luckily I have my best friend in Omaha so I always stop by her one night and it really helps break it up. Cheyenne is another good stopping point too if I get too tired. But yeah... The drive is rough. On the bright side (if your a country music fan...), I just drove across WY last wknd and didn't lose radio once, for the first time ever. I was shocked. Good luck with the drive though! Can't wait to meet up with you and climb when you get out here :)
